It gets assembled in the browser after JavaScript runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A human with a modern browser never notices. The browser executes the JavaScript and everything shows up. The problem is that most AI crawlers do not work like a browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and the crawlers behind most AI answers request the page and read the raw HTML that comes back. They generally do not execute JavaScript the way Chrome does. So if your content only appears after the JavaScript runs, these crawlers see an almost empty document. No headings, no paragraphs, no answers. Just a shell and a script tag. Call it the empty shell problem: it looks like a website to you and like nothing to a machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can check this in about ten seconds. Fetch the page with a plain HTTP client instead of a browser. Use a REST client, or curl, or any tool that shows you the untouched response body. If your service descriptions and the answers to real questions are not sitting there in the HTML, an AI crawler is not going to find them either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_is_not_just_rendering\"><\/span>It is not just rendering<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the part that proves the point about a website being more than what you see. Even when some content does render server side, these fast-build sites tend to skip everything that makes a page understandable to a machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is usually no semantic structure. It is div after div with no real heading hierarchy, so nothing signals what the page is actually about. There is no schema markup, so the site never tells search engines and language models what kind of business this is, where it operates, or what it offers. There is no answer-first content, just filler, so when someone asks a direct question there is no clean passage for the model to lift and cite. And the same business name, address, and description are often written a few slightly different ways across the site, which breaks the entity consistency that AI systems rely on to trust who you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of that shows up in a screenshot. All of it decides whether a language model can read you. A generator does not think about any of it, because it is producing something that looks finished, not something that is built right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_robotstxt_trap\"><\/span>The robots.txt trap<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the one that quietly kills a lot of these sites. Many are deployed behind default configurations that block AI crawlers outright. The owner never chose this. It came with the stack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open the site&#8217;s robots.txt and look for the AI user agents: GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot, PerplexityBot. If they are disallowed, it does not matter how good the content is. You told the machines to stay out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_are_they_worth_it\"><\/span>So, are they worth it?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a cheap way to exist online, yes. As a way to get found and win customers, usually no. The free version gets you a page. It does not get you read by the AI tools where a growing share of people now start their search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the real cost. It is not the dollars. It is the leads you never see, because your site is an empty shell that no assistant can read or cite. The site that gets found is built to be read by people and by machines: server-rendered HTML so the content actually exists in the response, real semantic structure, schema markup, answer-first content, consistent details everywhere, and a robots.txt that lets the AI crawlers in. None of it is exotic. Fetch the raw HTML with a non-browser client and confirm the real content is in the response. Read the robots.txt and confirm the AI user agents are allowed. Look at the markup and confirm there are real headings and schema, not just nested divs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it fails those, it will struggle in AI search, no matter how it looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start cheap if you have to.
