For a developer building a prototype, that creates an asset to rotate, inspect, and assess against the project’s requirements. A useful result still needs checks for hidden geometry, scale, materials, and its behavior in the destination scene.

Consider a prototype that needs a small desk lamp. You have a reference image and know where the lamp belongs, but no finished asset. The review below follows that example to help you decide what to keep, what to repair, and when a clearer reference would be more useful.

Table of Contents

Define the acceptance conditions before generating

Keep a clear reference and an untouched first version

Review the silhouette from the intended camera

Check geometry where parts meet

Inspect materials under ordinary scene lighting

Verify scale and placement inside the project

Measure the asset within a representative scene

Record a decision that the next person can use

Define the acceptance conditions before generating

Write down where the object will appear and what it must do. A lamp seen across a room needs different detail from one the player can pick up and examine. A static prop also has different requirements from an object with moving parts.

For the lamp, a useful initial brief might be: recognizable silhouette at the intended camera distance, a base that sits on the desk, and no obvious gaps where the support meets the shade. These are proposed acceptance conditions for this example, not universal asset standards.

Add the project’s technical constraints separately. Identify the target device, supported asset formats, and any existing limits for geometry and textures. Use budgets agreed for your project rather than borrowing a polygon count from an unrelated demo.

Keep a clear reference and an untouched first version

Choose an image that shows the entire object and makes important connections visible. For the lamp, the base, support, and shade should be distinguishable. Cropping away the base removes information you will later need to judge how the object rests on a surface.

After generating the initial model with N4D, keep the source image with the resulting asset so another reviewer can understand what guided the generation. Use images you own or have permission to reuse.

Save an untouched copy before making changes. Give later versions names that identify their purpose, such as a geometry repair or a reduced-detail version. If an edit creates a new problem, you should be able to compare it with the original without generating everything again.

Review the silhouette from the intended camera

Rotate the model through a full turn, then inspect the top and underside. Compare the visible proportions with the reference, while treating surfaces absent from the image as interpretations that need their own review.

Look at the asset at the distance and angle used in the prototype. A recognizable handle or narrow support may disappear at a small screen size. Conversely, a detail that looks unusual in an extreme close-up may have little effect on the planned scene.

Use a plain material for a second pass. Removing detailed surface color can make it easier to judge whether an apparent ridge belongs to the geometry or only appears in the texture. Record specific issues rather than describing the whole model as low quality.

Check geometry where parts meet

Inspect connections, thin features, openings, and surfaces hidden in the first preview. On the lamp, check the support at both ends and examine the rim of the shade. Decide whether apparent intersections are acceptable for the prototype or need repair.

Ask the following questions during this pass:

· Are there missing faces or unintended gaps visible from normal viewing angles?

· Do surfaces shade consistently as you rotate the object and change the light?

· Are disconnected pieces intentional, and can the target application handle them as required?

· Will any moving or deforming part need a separate review?

An object that looks correct while stationary may still need changes before animation. If deformation is part of the brief, test the planned movement instead of approving the asset from a static preview.

Inspect materials under ordinary scene lighting

Check the object under lighting similar to the destination scene. A bright preview environment can hide a muddy texture or make a reflective surface look more convincing than it does in context.

Look for stretched details, visible seams, and surface features that appear painted across separate parts. Pay attention to shadows or highlights already present in the reference that may have become part of the generated surface color. Those features can look inconsistent when the scene lighting changes.

If you simplify the mesh or change the material setup, inspect the appearance again. Approving a textured original does not automatically approve a later optimized version.

Verify scale and placement inside the project

A photograph without a known measurement does not establish the object’s real dimensions. Set the intended size using the project’s own references, then inspect the result beside objects whose scale is already established.

Check orientation and the point used to position or rotate the asset. For a desk lamp, placement should make it practical to put the base on the desk. If users can interact with it, review that interaction in the application, including any collision setup your project requires.

Reopen or import the deliverable in the destination tool. Confirm that its geometry and materials appear as expected and that any required companion files travel with it. A successful preview in the generation tool does not demonstrate a successful import elsewhere.

Measure the asset within a representative scene

Inspect the geometry count, texture dimensions, and material count against the project’s budgets. These measurements help identify what to investigate, but the final check belongs in the running application on a representative device.

For example, place the lamp in a scene that resembles the prototype’s expected workload. Compare performance with and without it, using the project’s normal profiling tools. If the asset exceeds the agreed budget, try reducing complexity and test the revised version again.

For a glTF or GLB deliverable, the Khronos glTF Validator can identify format and data problems. Its checks complement visual inspection. A valid file can still have the wrong proportions or be unsuitable for your performance target.

Record a decision that the next person can use

Keep the review outcome short and specific. Mark the asset as accepted for the stated prototype, needing named repairs, or requiring a new reference. Include the version, intended use, unresolved issues, and the environment in which it was checked.

For the lamp, the decision could allow use in a room layout while leaving close-up inspection or animation unapproved. That tells the next developer what they can safely build on. For an asset generated with N4D, that review connects the initial result to a specific project need. As the prototype changes, revisit the relevant checks rather than assuming the original approval covers every later use.

N4D turns a reference image into an initial 3D model through its image to 3D generator.
