Oracle Unveils Its AI Assistant for Coding: Oracle Code Assist

Last week, Oracle launched Code Assist, its AI-based assistant for code generation. Will it manage to stand out from the competition, which is already well-established? Oracle has trained and refined its tool with programming languages like Java and SQL.

The Promise:

Oracle Code Assist is an AI code companion that boosts developer velocity, enhances code consistency, and is optimized for Java, SQL, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).

Oracle showcases its assistant in a video:

The family of code generation assistants continues to grow with the release of Oracle’s Code Assist. Built on AI, its aim is to provide code suggestions to developers, enhancing their productivity.

The company hasn’t provided a release date but stated that the tool is already being used internally.

Code Assist can be utilized for writing, updating, and restructuring code written in most “modern” programming languages. Powered by LLMs, the assistant is optimized for Java, SQL, and application development on OCI. It also supports Ruby, C++, and soon Python, Terraform, and SuiteScript (Netsuite).

Code Assist is capable of providing code snippets, dependency analysis, error-reduction alternatives, test scenarios, annotations, and more.
It’s deployed as a plugin for JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA IDE and Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code editor (which I use ^^).
In a competitive market, Oracle aims to differentiate itself through deeper integration with its software and support for Java and SQL languages. It remains to be seen if it can provide added value compared to its competitors.
